Introducing Unlimited Domestic Upgrades

  1. What are Unlimited Domestic Upgrades?

Unlimited Domestic Upgrades are automatic and complimentary upgrades for our MileagePlus® elite members. We recognize how much you value the privileges your elite membership brings, and have listened to your feedback about simplifying your travel experience.

We’ll automatically request Unlimited Domestic Upgrades on behalf of all elite members traveling on or after March 19, 2010, within the continental United States, Hawaii, Alaska, Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean and Central America. That means no more forgetting to apply your certificates and no more checking to see that you have enough miles – we’ll take care of it! We’ll also request an upgrade for up to one companion traveling on the same reservation.

  2. I thought Unlimited Domestic Upgrades were coming in the second quarter of 2010. Why have they been moved up to March 19, 2010?

Unlimited Domestic Upgrades are a valued benefit that our elite members have been asking for, and we’ve made it a priority to deliver it as early as possible. We know you’ll appreciate the simpler, hassle-free upgrade experience.

  3. What if I bought my ticket before March 19, 2010? Am I still eligible for Unlimited Domestic Upgrades?

Yes. MileagePlus® elite members who purchased an eligible ticket prior to March 19, 2010, will also have Unlimited Domestic Upgrades requested on their behalf.

Eligible members

  1. Am I eligible for Unlimited Domestic Upgrades?
Unlimited Domestic Upgrades will be available to all MileagePlus® elite members: Global ServicesSM, 1K®, Premier Executive® and Premier®.

  2. I am a Continental Airlines OnePass® elite member. Am I eligible for Unlimited Domestic Upgrades on United®?

At this time, only MileagePlus® elite members can take advantage of Unlimited Domestic Upgrades. Later in 2010, we plan to expand this offering to Continental OnePass members – please check back soon as we unveil more information.

  3. Can I use Unlimited Domestic Upgrades on every carrier I accrue miles with today?

No, Unlimited Domestic Upgrades may only be used on eligible flights operated and marketed by United® or United Express®.

Later in 2010, MileagePlus® elite members will also be able to upgrade on eligible flights operated by our partner, Continental Airlines – stay tuned for more details on this exciting enhancement!

  4. Can I use Unlimited Domestic Upgrades on codeshare flights marketed by another carrier?

No. Flights operated by United® or United Express®, but marketed by another carrier, are not eligible for Unlimited Domestic Upgrades.

  5. On what flights can I use Unlimited Domestic Upgrades?

Unlimited Domestic Upgrades will be automatically requested on behalf of all elite members flying within the continental United States, Hawaii, Alaska, Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean and Central America.

Unlimited Domestic Upgrades will not be valid on our three-cabin transcontinental p.s.® flights. You may continue to use MileagePlus Upgrade Awards, Systemwide Upgrades or Regional Upgrades to experience United Business® or United First® on these unique flights.

  6. Why are transcontinental p.s.® flights excluded from Unlimited Domestic Upgrades?

We view our p.s. flights as distinct from the rest of our domestic flights. The seats and onboard products are more in line with international flight offerings, leading those flights to book differently than traditional domestic flights, particularly in the premium cabins. In light of this unique product and customer demand, we have decided to exclude p.s. from Unlimited Domestic Upgrades.

You may continue to use MileagePlus Upgrade Awards, Systemwide Upgrades or Regional Upgrades on these flights.

  7. On what fares can I use Unlimited Domestic Upgrades?

    Most United Economy® revenue fares (Y, B, M, E, U, H, Q, V, W, S, T, L, K) will be eligible. All United Business® revenue fares (J, C, D, Z) will also be eligible.

Unlimited Domestic Upgrades are not valid for use on award tickets (Saver, Standard, One-Way or Miles & Money Awards), or on previously upgraded tickets (booked in NC ticket class).

  8. Can I use Unlimited Domestic Upgrades when traveling with friends or family?

Yes, we’ll automatically request Unlimited Domestic Upgrades for all elite members and up to one companion traveling on the same reservation.

When upgrade space becomes available, requests will be prioritized by the MileagePlus® elite member’s status, booking class purchased and by time of ticketing.

If you are traveling with more than one companion on the same reservation, your upgrade request will not be automatically processed. Please contact United Reservations or speak with an airport agent for assistance. To sponsor other passengers for an upgrade, you may continue to use MileagePlus Upgrade Awards, Systemwide Upgrades or Regional Upgrades.

  9. Can I take advantage of Unlimited Domestic Upgrades if I buy my ticket through a travel agency or third-party website?

Yes. We’ll automatically request an upgrade on behalf of all elite members for any eligible United® or United Express® flights when a reservation is ticketed.

  10. Can I take advantage of Unlimited Domestic Upgrades if I have a paper ticket?

Yes. If you are a MileagePlus® elite member and have a paper ticket, please see an airport agent on your day of departure to request an Unlimited Domestic Upgrade.

  11. I bought my ticket before I reached MileagePlus elite status. Since I’m now an elite member, am I eligible for Unlimited Domestic Upgrades?

Yes. MileagePlus® elite members who purchased an eligible ticket before they reached elite status may contact United Reservations or speak with an airport agent to manually request an Unlimited Domestic Upgrade.

  12. I am a MileagePlus elite member, but I forgot to include my MileagePlus number when I purchased my ticket. Am I still eligible for Unlimited Domestic Upgrades?

Yes. MileagePlus® elite members who purchased an eligible ticket may contact United Reservations or speak with an airport agent to add their MileagePlus number and manually request an Unlimited Domestic Upgrade.
